A simple Lefort 1 advancement as I depicted will have little impact on the vertical plane. However a lefort is very versatile as you can include various levels of impaction and tilt. You basically have the full 3D movement ability. However most of that versatility will not lead to an aesthetically pleasing outcome.

You currently have a very nice/optimal width to hight facial relationship. Removing some height may make your face appear to wide (for my tastes of course-others may like really wide faces - think more extreme asian korean). Right now I suspect you don't have a gummy smile (correct me if I am wrong) so removing some height below the nose would require a lip lift to restore reasonable teeth show and your upper lip would become extremely short. Also your mandible would, subsequent to maxilla impaction, tilt up more anteriorly. This would lead to more focus on the jaw angles and possibly a block head type lower face. If you did not like this you would then have to have some type of V line or face fem surgery to look good again. You get the picture!

Your appearance is well above average and all the above surgery is just alot of trouble and even if all of it was completely successful it would not shield you from any comments from others. I certainly would never mention this to anyone in person but the above would certainly move you far away from my ideal.

So basically if you really want this make sure it is for yourself only and not related to any external opinion.

Thanks fixit..I tried imagining the Lefort maxilla impaction, and think I can follow what you described.

I guess I automatically associate a long midface with being an unattractive feature and a detraction from one's looks. Are there any examples out there of women out there with long midfaces who are generally considered beautiful, not in spite of this, but maybe even because of it?

This is what I suspected! Part of the reason for this maybe current fashion trends and the neonatal like appearance of models nowadays. Some of thess models look like insects LOL! All of them look like children. My daughter has a short midface and it looks good on her BECAUSE she is 6 years old.

Just to be clear you have a longer mid face than what may be seen in magazines now but you don't have an outright long made face. In fact I suspect it is well within the norm for caucasians. Go back 15-20 years (80s -early 90s) and all the models had midfaces like yours - think Cindy crawford, claudia scheffer, christy Turlington. Renaissance sculptures (depicting ideals) never had short midfaces.

One last point. Shorter midfaces start to look simply fat with only a little weight gain.

Compare the midface of the neanderthal (left) to the midface of the modern human (right).

Neanderthals had much longer midfaces. They became shorter due to selective breeding.....in other words women prefered shorter midfaces to longer ones.

I LOL every time fixit complains about having a short midface...I'd kill to have that "problem".

There is a mainstream insult for people with long mid faces..."horse face"
There is no equivalent insult for people with short mid faces.

I dont think I have EVER looked at anyone's face and thought..."his midface is too short!" I dont think any of us have....but we sure jump on a long midface!

We have Tori Spelling to thank that. And SJP. If not for them, we'd never have heard it.

What makes you say that? Do you know who coined the phrase?

Im sure the phrase would exist had those two people not been born.

The term predates these two ladies. I remember it from my childhood.

Yatterman, interesting post. Are the skulls the same sex? To me, the Neanderthal looks male while the skull on the right looks female. This could account for some of the differences in midfaces.
However, I agree with you about long midfaces. I hate mine and am dying to shorten it :)

It didnt say in the article but I really doubt they would use different genders...that would have defeated the whole purpose of having the comparison in the first place. So they're probably the same gender (probably male).

They look like they're from different genders because the difference is so dramatic, neanderthals looked A LOT more masculine.

I think the difference in midfaces would be accounted for by many thousand years of EVOLOTION rather than one being male and other female. Female Neanderthals also had that kind of big protruded upper orbital brow bossing.

It's interesting that based on the effect that humans have on the environment and in turn, on the food we eat, people in western societies are becoming increasingly androgenous as a result of the hormones in our foods. And studies have shown that attraction is directly affected by hormone levels..which I guess would explain the increasingly common androgenous ideal of beauty.

The second part of my consultation with Dr. Super, a maxillo surgeon in NY (I think his website is www.facesthatsmile.com), is scheduled for tomorrow, where we will to go over my facial scans, teeth molds, morphs, etc. Are there any questions I should be sure to ask him or concerns to address? I'm still very new to this...Thanks!
