What is a "dead account"?

A dead account is an account that has been in my system for a long time BUT has 0 posts to it. Since these accounts have no posting history to them, there would be no alteration to the flow of posts on my boards to delete these accounts from my system.

A dead account is an account that uses resources on my board but does not contribute to them in any way.

Recently, many accounts that were signed up here, well over a year ago and had the status of 'newbie' BUT for which had 0 posts (when they had like over a whole year to use the accounts to post) were deranked to; "Unapproved".

Yesterday when going through the members list, I found TONS of people who signed up long time ago and had approval to post. Yet then NEVER used the account to post. So, those accounts were de-ranked to "unapproved"; the same status as a sign up with no approval to post.

So an account that says: "unapproved" MAY be classified as a dead account BUT not in all cases. It depends on when the sign up was.

FAQs:

"But I use my account daily to read the member only boards and to use the PM system"

It is a TOS violation to PM posters with whom you have not established an open relationship on the board. An "open relationship" just means that the other member you are PMing would be able to see a post of yours on the boards. All posting members have a type of 'open relationship' with each other because they can see each other's posts. That is not the case for someone signing up ONLY to use the PM system.

Some boards are "members only" as to remove them from the public venue. Removal of a board from the public venue (something where "guests" don't have access to read it) frees up bandwidth aimed at having the board run faster for contributing members. So, to cut down on bandwidth use and to try to free up more bandwidth for contributing members, some dead accounts need to be deleted from the system.

"Why do some people have dead accounts that are still in the system?"

It takes a long time to go through all the pages of sign ups as evaluate whether an account of rank; 'unapproved' is to be classified as 'dead' and many days to go through all of them.
-----------

"But if an account says: "Unapproved. Write to MissJ..for approval" that account can't contribute posts because that status does not allow posting. So how can it be a dead account?"

It's a dead account if the person (or SPAM bot) has never written for approval which is the case of the MANY sign ups who never write for approval. In some cases, they can be SPAM auto-bot sign ups which the "unapproved" status TRAPS before they can get on and of course, they will not be writing to me for approval. LOL

It's also a dead account if someone does write to me for approval but ends up giving me a lot of flack with regard to the $10 paypal contribute.

"Why are you removing dead accounts from the system?"

A few reasons:

1: It makes it easier for me to navigate the members list when there are not a lot of non-active member accounts on there.

2: Better 'Feng Shui' for the site to cut down on clutter.

3: Eliminates the possibility of holders of dead accounts to PM contributing members. Some of my members are sometimes 'hit' with PMs from people with 0 posting history and the PMs request personal info from them.

4: Cuts down on band width usage and makes the board go faster for the active members.
