I'm looking for a good facial moisturizer. I'm male and my skin is dry and is further irritated by shaving. I'd prefer something I can buy at CVS or Walgreens as opposed to Bloomingdale's.

Thanks.

My sunscreen is used as my moisturizer, that way they don't water each other down.

Vanicream Lite Lotion is excellent. This lotion is used to treat eczema in babies, so it's extremely gentle. You can find it at Walgreen's. It's very affordable ($7.99), and 8 oz. will last forever.
Alba Hawaiian Oil-Free Moisturizer
Cetaphil Fragrance-Free Lotion (not cream)
Aveeno Baby lotion is very gentle and very affordable

I know less about sunscreens or SPF moisturizers. I would avoid the Neutrogena Ultra-Sheer Sunscreen line. Very irritating crap. Check Target's baby aisle for California Baby Sunscreen. It's about as gentle as you can get.

I would suggest shaving with a twin blade razor. I learned this from an acne website. The owner said a single blade was too irritating, and 3 blades and above were even more irritating. I experimented and found that it was true for me too. I use a shave oil, and it's been a miracle for me. Shaving is so comfortable and smooth now. The only drawback is that I get a lot of the gunk in my blade, and it has to be cleaned after only a few strokes. Also, a really good way to moisturize dry skin after shaving: add a couple drops of shave oil to the rest of your face, splash your face, then blot it dry. I have sensitive, acne prone skin and I never got any breakouts from this. Using a shave oil and a disposable twin blade razor SAVED MY SKIN.

I highly recommend Skin Deep Cosmetics Safety Database, which has health safety reviews for almost every personal care product. Indispensible when you're trying to find gentle products.

HideMe, I found that DB several years ago. Just be careful and don't take everything they say about what's harmful and not, they are SUPPPPPERRRR conservative. There's very little, according to them, that won't end up harming you or that is not a carcinogenic. Just sayin'.....

Yes, it's very important to take their reports with some healthy skepticism. Because... breathing is carcinogenic. Certain products, like exfoliants (salicylic acid, AHAs), are of course going to have health concerns, when used excessively. It is extremely important for that data to be freely available to consumers, though.

Oh, and let me express my dislike for the following company products, if I may:
Clean & Clear - toners/astringents, acne washes, salicylic acid moisturizers, SPF moisturizers
Neutrogena - salicylic acid body washes, Ultra-Sheer sunscreen lotions (the SPF 5000 line)
St. Ives Apricot Scrubs
Wal-Mart's version of Cetaphil (DON'T BE A CHEAP-ASS LIKE ME! SAVE YOUR $5! THIS SHIT BURNED MY SKIN!)
Aveeno "sensitive skin" shaving cream

I'm curious why you don't like the Neutrogena products?

I'm not a Cetaphil cleanser fan. They use SLS and parabens in many of their cleanser products, even their most "gentle" one, which is mostly alcohols of one sort or another + SLS + parabens:

Quote:
Cetaphil® Gentle Skin Cleanser is gentle enough for children, teens and adults.

Ingredients: Water, Cetyl Alcohol, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Stearyl Alcohol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Butylparaben.

I agree Cetaphil is excellent. Eucerin is a great brand too.

I do not like their Ultra-Sheer (SPF 70, 85, 100) sunscreens because they irritate my face - if they do not sting, then they make me break out.

Some have problems, but Cetaphil Gentle Skin Cleanser has always worked very well for me.

As long as you like it and it works well for you, is all that really matters.

OK, so I'm on the website of the shave oil I use, Shave Secret.

And I see this at the bottom of their homepage:

Makes me want to find a new shaving oil now.

Perhaps they are referring to stuff made in China or by below min wage workers such as illegal aliens or migrant workers? It does strike me as a political statement of sorts; one that's against jobbing out employment to outside countries or to non citizens--one that advocates for US labor. Yes? No?

I've been having problems with computer since May. I'm on a loaner now and still waiting for a new one. If I don't get back to you or am not on board, it would be most likely due to another computer problem.

Hmmmmm, hard to say. It could be either, I think.

I'll go with your theory, Miss J. It's easier to take, espically if you like the the shave oil, HideMe.

I am bothered by the "English-speaking Americans" bit, because lots of companies put "Proudly made in the USA" on their products.

It's a pretty bold to put something that politically divisive on your company's website.

Well, it sounds like this one is trying to imply that even though it's made in USA, they don't hire illegal aliens for the job. I think they are trying to imply that. Write to them and ask them what they mean.

I love Dr. Belter Aqua Silk 24 moisturizer. It is all natural, super hydrating and feels absolutely amazing. It is a German line though, so you'll have to go to the website to find stores/clinics that sell it.

What about Nivea cream. That seems to be a classic standby.

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for your recommendations.

ahappycamper -- What kind of sunscreen do you use?

HideMe -- I will try one of your recommendations...probably the first one I see when I walk into the store :). Also, Shave Secret looks like it might be a good product, but the ethnocentric marketing is a big turnoff.

MissJ -- Which Nivea cream are you thinking of? I checked the Nivea web site and there are several types of moisturizer creams. Is there a certain ingredient I should be looking for? Nivea for Men

I'm a Cetaphil guy. I use their moisturizing lotion on my face and love it. It's noncomedogenic, which is essential to me, and it doesn't sting my somewhat sensitive skin after shaving. I've tried everything from Creme de la Mer to Atopalm to Neutrogena, but Cetaphil works best for me. And HideMe - - I'd like to recommend a product to you: Jack Black Beard Lube. It's marketed as a two-in-one shave oil and shaving cream, and I couldn't live without it. In fact, all of the Jack Black products are great. If you're determined to have an oil, though, I'd suggest Clarins. I've used it and really like it . . . but I like the Jack Black better. And make sure you get the kind in the tube--the beard lube--not the stuff in the jar.
