You could also try swimming. I've gone back to swimming (did not do it for 6 months and that's when I got all the nerve arm/hand pain) and it does seem to help. But then again when I'm swimming, I'm not on computer typing like a fiend. It's supposed to 'lubricate' the joints. Seriously, the only time I've ever experienced joint pain (which was in these past 6 months) was coincident with my NOT going swimming. Then I down about 4-5 100mg niacin tabs and sit in the sauna. They are supposed to open up the blood vessels and help drain out toxins and to help with cholesterol. Only problem with swimming is that the goggle marks make me look like I need an upper bleph.
I've been having problems with computer since May. I'm on a loaner now and still waiting for a new one. If I don't get back to you or am not on board, it would be most likely due to another computer problem.

OMG MissJ! I used to take 100 mg of "flushing" niacin (the kind that hits your gut like an A-bomb!) daily for circulation. But as of years ago, I simply can not tolerate it any more. It made my skin just erupt in such a red, itchy flush that I was afraid it was too much of a good thing. And I read ya on the goggle marks! I swim with a snorkel mask and just loathe the big ring left on my upper face after each session in the pool. Makes me grumpy and self-conscious at once. Not that I'll give up swimming, tho. It's TOO much fun! :-) ========================================== MissJ wrote:... Then I down about 4-5 100mg niacin tabs and sit in the sauna. Maybe a stupid question as I don't swim (I can't take the depression from seeing my old body in a bathing suit) as I have no home pool and won't go in public to swim, but can't you just close your eyes when you're swimming and forget a mask? When I was younger and went swimming a lot, the water did not bother my eyes so I never wore anything on my eyes. Just wondering...

I can't swim with closed eyes--you have to keep in a straight line.
As to the niacin, ya--it makes the red itchy feel. That's why I do it when I'm near the water.

I'm having a similar problem with neuropathic pain in my neck which sometimes affects my left arm and fingers. Unfortunately anti inflammatory meds are not cutting it for me any more. I did have good success for a time with Pycnogenol. Have you considered taking one of the Neurontin drugs? I'm contemplating taking a neurontin to calm the nerve pain, but am very hesitant. I've tried taking gabapentin before, but it made me very tired and forgetful. Turns out the Dr. had me on 900mg a day instead of 100-300!

Miss J, I'm afraid of it, too, because of my bad past experience. Can you tell me why you're afraid of the stuff?

Those drugs have side effects. I'm using something I got at health food store called "nerve fix". It's some homeopathic formula (pricey). Have no idea if it's doing anything though.

Ya, the side effects are what's stopping me from getting the prescription filled. I quit taking gabapentin after 2 months - weened myself off like I was supposed to, and the withdrawal was freaky. My nerves went haywire. I couldn't even drink a half cup of coffee without feeling very jittery. I think I'll look into the "nerve fix" and see what's in it.

Neurontin is scary. Know from what it did to my sister and a friend of hers (plus a person on the IPL/Laser support board) that the side effects are HUGE. If you think the other drug made you tired and sleepy, prepare to be a zombie if you take Neurontin. It has so many bad side effects I would never consider it, unless it was a matter of life and death.

msm powder REALLY WORKS
but you need mega doses so need to buy powder not pills
16,000mg per day for a month each teaspoon is 4,000 mg so 4 tsp
it tastes horribly bitter
i either mix it with applesauce or carefully place each tsp on an over-sized spoon and slowly add juice then "swig" it down quick
it worked for me
also rubbing EMU oil on joints at night and upon waking
this will work if you are willing to go through the hassle and time

From Psychology Today: "The good news is that nerve pain is very treatable. Many studies have shown that using nutritional support with lipoic acid 300 mg 2x day, Acetyl-L-Carnitine 2,000 mg a day, Inositol (500-1,000 mg a day), and vitamins B6 (50-100 mg a day) and B12 (500-5,000 mcg a day—both B vitamins and Inositol are in the Energy Revitalization System vitamin powder) can actually help heal the nerves and decrease or eliminate the pain" I've been doing this for 2 weeks. I also quit taking Fosamax. My pain is almost gone.

I have tried over and over to do the sinus rinse thing... Maybe I am just a total wimp, but it is painful and the saline up my nose makes me nauseous and I can't do it. Kudos to those tough enough to handle it; because it really does work wonders for a lot of people.
Try snorting a little of your shower water from the nozzle. It's not so much water and it can help you getting used to it.

I would love to know if there are any good double blind trials on it.
